Sophie is one of our junior rowers and currently our only PR2 classified rower. PR2 means Sophie rows using only her trunk and arms but due to Sophie’s physical impairment has to row with one oar feathered and one oar taped on the square. She joined the squad in 2014 and has been a hardworking, conscientious member putting her all in to her training both on the water, and on the erg when the wind and water have made rowing out of Balmain unsafe.
Twelve years ago, Sophie Delezio suffered third-degree burns to 85% of her body after a car smashed into her Sydney childcare centre. She lost her feet, some fingers, and her right ear. She was then involved in a second accident.
Sophie loves to swim but her skin-grafting operations often kept her out of the water. So instead of competing under water, Sophie has found a passion for powering on top having joined the Para Program at the Balmain Rowing Club, where she is remains a valued part of our squad.
Sophie believes rowing
“Is a really good sport for me to build up my muscles and help my mobility.”
We believe Sophie is a wonderful asset to our squad and she brings the toughness needed for racing as well as tenacity, resilience and joy to us. She always strives to win. Sophie is also an accomplished actress and juggles her rowing with her rehearsals.
This season Sophie and our aim is for more wins and a doubles race.
