Christening and Training 2018

Wow - could we really fit anything more into one weekend?  Last weekend the Para Program raced 9 crews at the Spring Regatta, 'springing' into action with 24 premiership points at the first regatta of the season.  However, not wanting to rest on our laurels, we also ran a training camp and christened not one, but FOUR new boats for the program!   The Sky cleared just in time for the boats to be christened... Seven new para athletes took part in the training day, having been identified by Rowing NSW and the program at a recent 'try-out' day run by the Australian Paralympic Committee.  Those athletes joined over a dozen BRC para rowers in an all-day training session the day after the Spring Regatta.Although the weather certainly challenged all participants,…

The 2018 Rowing World Championships were held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria between 9 and 16 September 2018, and this year saw the Balmain Para-Rowing Program's James Talbot compete in an historic two events in the PR3 category - the mixed coxed four, and a new coxless pair event, introduced into the program for the first time this year. James raced the pair with Torrens Rowing Club's Jed Altschwager, and in a very competitive field they obtained an incredibly strong result, coming home with the silver medal.  James, who raced with his School, SCEGGS Redlands prior to rowing with Balmain, partnered with new rower Jed, who has only been rowing for 18 months, but was identified by Rowing Australia and Torrens RC as a potential para-athlete following the Rio Paralympics.   James and…

Celebrating An Amazing 40 Years of Service, Integrity, Courage and Mateship. I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by; And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking. And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking.” The Chief                           [caption id="attachment_1018" align="alignnone" width="225"] Chief Glen[/caption] We celebrate our rowers actions both on the course and events in their personal lives but behind each rower and the squad are amazing people. Some are world renowned musicians, others are leaders in the fields of management, education, medicine, sport or service.…

To HMAS ADELAIDE – Thanks!

On Wednesday May 16, members of the squad received a guided tour of HMAS Adelaide and then had the pleasure of sharing lunch with Commanding Officer, Captain Jonathan Earley and the crew of the Adelaide. We were invited to assist the catering  crew with the preparation of an all crew BBQ before the Adelaide's RIMPAC deployment. Donning our aprons, gloves and very special navy NAVY caps we set to work following the instructions of Dougie, Alex and the other chefs. We must have done ok as the food vanished as quickly as the platters could be filled. Members of the crew showed their support for our program by raising $1,000 over the course of their lunch break. On our arrival at Garden Island, we were met by Commander Christopher Searle…

It's always healthy to look within, to cast our eyes and our minds and question  whether our sport is as diverse, reflective of community as it could or should be.  Are we forgoing gold by forgoing diversity; by ignoring those that have the capability and capacity, the willpower and strength to succeed but lack the knowledge or pathway in to this sport. Thanks US Rowing and Patrick McNerney for this thoughtful article: "“We Have to Fix This” BY PATRICK MCNERNEY • FEBRUARY 1, 2018 “We have to fix this.” That was Anita DeFrantz’s statement to me during the first few weeks of my joining USRowing in September, and the message was very clear. Today marks the beginning of Black History Month, providing us a great opportunity to recognize the African-American athletes that…
